It's funny...

the things that you miss or don't remember...

I slept like a baby last night, my lovely comfy bed ... or I think the fact that I'd had very little sleep in the 2 days previous might have had something to do with that...

Sugar Puffs for breakfast yummy... just miss them cos we can't get them in SA....

Sky - we have satellite TV but not Sky oh all those lovely channels to choose from...

Having your post delivered to the door.... (even if none of it is for you...lmao)

The birds... Paul has been keeping my garden visitors well fed so we still get all the birdies waking us in the morning and keeping me entertained...

Tescos ... Kelsey and I had a great 3 hour tour around Tescos this afternoon, did you know you can now get watercolour pencils and chalks from Tesco's? (I'm impressd) ... I am definately going to get fat eating all this lurverly stuffs we just bought ... I can't help it I LOVE food shopping!!!!

We're here!!!

So we're here - we made it safe and sound...

What a day - or rather 2!!! We set off yesterday (Sunday) at 12 noon from Durban to Johannesburg ... first flight very uneventful.... we arrived Johannesburg with plenty of time for our next flight to Dubai... we checked in, went through security no problem ... then we hit passport control (now really did you seriously expect no problems???) It would appear that as Kelsey is 'South African' he MUST have a valid South African passport to leave the country... does'nt matter that he has a British Passport - "it is his right to own a South African passport" that's all I kept hearing from every 'professional' at passport control... aaaargh!!!!

Little do they realise have any of them ever tried to organise a passport in good old SA in a) less than 6 weeks and b) without his father being present to sign for him.... !!!!! Apparently I'm gonna go through all the same aggro on our return .... (please tell me again WHY exactly it is I want to return!!!! PLEASE)

But the rest of the flights were pretty uneventful... other than being long with very little sleep... And guess what NO PROBLEMS at UK Passport control... hello first world!!!!(LMAO)

Now I'm back in MY HOUSE and what a great feeling it is... OK so it's very 'minimalistic' and wow Jane you've done a great job with the 'dressing' ... and it's hard to believe that a guy actually lives here it's neat and tidy... Paul reckons no problem cos he's never here (too busy working!!!)

The things that you miss when you don't have them... The things you tend to take for granted...
I mean like it's 8.45pm and it's still light !!! In fact I kinda forgot it was dinner time cos it's still light!!!!But had no hesitation as to what to have for dinner tonight - Fish & Chips with Mushy Peas, lashings of salt & vinegar (mmmmm yummy!!!)

And I know it's going to be early to bed tonight - light or not... :-) And boy how lovely and comfy is that bed of mine??? lmao.

Finally packing cases!!!

So the day for packing is finally here.... OMG!!!

Have I remembered everything??? Have I got all the necessary paperwork??? Am I supposed to re-check our flights??? I'm running around like an idiot who's never flown before LMAO!

Ok so the cases are on the bed ... have I put anything in them yet NOPE ... too busy checking the e-mails... doing a bit more on-line shopping so I have lots of parcels arriving next week.... and Blogging and well generally 'faffing' around finding excuses not to pack... I think I thrive on the last minute stress!!!! lol

Done Paul's last minute shop for him... the odd thing missing but hey that's what you get when you give me the list so late... did the typical 'panic purchase' (in case I don't have enough) this morning... so now I HAVE TO PACK... (Summer or winter??? it's warmer here in winter than it is there??? - layers darling, layers!!!!)

Kelseys is bouncing off the walls at the moment - wants it to be tomorrow already....

Just so you know - I will have my old UK cell phone number switched back on when I arrive UK side... so if you still have that you can drop me a txt message ! (or not!!!)

Hopefully see a lot of you all next week .............. :-) !!!

Another strange day...

Polar Bear Swim today ????

Well apparently it's supposed to be winter here (only a mild 26c today) and the idea is that the 'brave kids' at school all go for a swim today (in the middle of winter - in the heated pool only 30c) and they get out into the freezing cold, get wrapped in blankets and have hot chocolate and hot dogs !!!!

They did all of the above bar the freezing cold and blankets.... they loved it and we (TMC) sweated our asses of serving hot chocolate (with marshmallows) and hot dogs in the blazing sun in our winter woolies lmao.

So if this is winter I think I can 'endure this' .... but hark don't talk too soon apparently there's a 'cold' spell coming - due to arrive about errr Sunday and stay till errrr Friday 17th July (ha! ha! ha! pmsl!!!)

We've also had a visitor recently - meet Lela - she's the cutest puppy ever... Saturday when we got back from the rugby here's this cutie patootie sitting at the gate 'chatting' to Indi & Shadow... Aunty J didn't want to let her in cos she didn't want to get too attached to madam... So long story short (not) Aunty J takes her to the local pound, after Kelsey had walked around the neighbourhood asking if anyone has lost her??? Sunday morning her owner turns up and they are re-united ... he goes out to work at 7.30am Monday morning and Lela calls to visit at 7.40am !!!! She's found a hole ... in our fence and hers!!!

She calls in for her breakfast daily and mum says she's going to start a Doggy Day Care Centre....

Always at the last minute ...

Why is it that everything has to happen at the last minute???

Why is it that when people (the professional ones I mean/ the bank/ the lawyers/ the builder/ the dentist/ the doctor etc...) hear you're going away for a couple of days they all want to see you like now!!! or you have to be somewhere by a certain time.... like you aren't stressed enough trying to organise yourself.... Is it my fault all my ducks have to be in a row before I go away???

I get myself sorted mate!!!! You get to the back of the que!!!! (lmao loudly)

In fact because of everyone suddenly spring extra things on me - I've even cancelled an appointment to try and fit everything in... and I still don't have all the shopping done to take to UK....

Monday, 22 June 2009

6 days to departure ...

It's weird, I'm still not 100% sure that I'm going back to the UK... I mean I am, the tickets are booked an all! Kelsey and Paul have chatted all weekend and last week about how exciting it all is... Kelsey is doing the typical count down... Planning every day so that it's full of all the things he wants to do... places he wants to go, people he wants to see, food he wants to eat, apparently we have to stop at Mickie D's straight out of the airport!!! (lmao...)

But me ??? I'm not sure if I'm excited... apprehensive... nervous... Strange really, my shopping list is 2 x A4 pages long, my list of people to see is just as long and yet???

I'm feeling a bit bad about leaving mum here for 3 weeks... and Indi... etc... BUT is it maybe cos I'm scared that I get there and probably don't want to come back??? (sorry guys I know deep especially for me eh?)

I've still gotta decide on what clothes to take with me, the cases still gotta be packed and true to form Paul sends me a shopping list TODAY !!!! Men can't they think ahead??? Like I got nowt better to do than go shopping for him eh?

I mean, it's haircuts, waxing, nails etc. etc. etc. Don't you guys know what we women have to prioritise before we go on holiday??? Please!!!!!

I was sent this list via e-mail from one of my mates and thought I'd pass it on for you all to read. It was written by someone who had just rolled over to 90 years of age, it makes you think... then I thought maybe one day I should start my own list:
The 45 lessons life has taught me:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick.
Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie.
Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come.

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

Happy Fathers Day Dads...

Wishing all the Dads out there a Happy Fathers Day for tomorrow...

We wish we could be spending the day with Paul... but only a week to go...

The shopping list is getting longer... the places we want to re-visit is getting longer and the people we want to see - this list is also getting longer - hopefully I'm gonna have enough time to see everyone and do all that shopping ... whheeeeeeeee!

Well any guesses what I was doing today ??? Yup you got it - Rugby !!! we were up at 4am this morning cos the kids were playing at a venue 2 hours away... I mean who actually gets up at 4am, it was still pitch black dark... I hope in years to come my child appreciates this... you know how the parents always get blamed when they have issues... well I think I'm getting issues with all this lack of sleep!!! LMAO Paranoia !!!!

The kids played well, even tho they lost 7-5, the weather was great ... did'nt even feel like winter today... and the good thing was we were home in time to watch the British & Irish Lions get their butts whooped by the Boks so the day ended on a high note ...

More tales from Africa....

Things only get more and more complicated and confusing!!!!

I knew deep down there was a reason why I was'nt 100% comfortable with the set up we have here at the moment = Us here - Paul there... and I could'nt quite put my finger on it ... but all has been revealed... As a married woman you actually don't exist as an individual AT ALL ...

Here in SA if you're married (in community of property as they call it here) you can't do anything without your husbands permission... I can't apply for a bank account...! I can't open my own accounts anywhere...! I can't apply for my son's passport...! I can't rent a property...! In fact I don't think I can breathe without his permission ---- No wonder MEN love Africa so much - gives them this whole Macho image ... makes them feel even more important than they really are .... TALK ABOUT OLD FASHIONED ... er why did those women tie themselves to the railings ????

What to do with so much free time???

So what did we get up to this loooong weekend???

Saturday - Kelsey went his usual horse riding with Aunty J and we were invited to a Braai in the evening at Matthew's place (Kelsey's mate that I'm taxi mum for! ;-) It was so nice to just chill out over a glass of wine, some good company and swap kids stories!!! Kelsey and Matthew are like 2 peas out of the same pod (frightening I know!!!lol) No wonder their teacher is a bit more grey this year than last !!!!

Needless to say I went home childless again... it's much more fun to sleep over at your mates house (better than a house full of ladies) Not that I'm moaning it means I get some peace and quiet... and a lie in too.

Sunday - I spent the rest of the day Crafting (Beading actually !!!) You can see in the photos my 'large' workspace... can you spot the tea & snacks ;-> of course have to keep those handy for 'inspiration'!!!!

As usual Kelsey came home knackered from Matthews place ... it wasn't too long before he was in bed... :-)

My very large workspace ... LOL :-) Tea & Snax a necessity

Some of the finished items... some of you may see these again soon !!!!

Monday - We checked the weather forecast and it said Monday was going to be a good day so it was decided a trip to the beach would be a good idea... We collected Matthew (it's so much easier with 2 than 1 !!! lmao) and off we went to Umhlanga Beach ... only to find the part we usually go under renovation (everywhere is under renovation at the moment - everyone's gearing up for the 2010 Soccer World Cup !!!! especially the tourist spots) But we found a spot that the boys could swim and boogie board and they had a great time... I even went mad a got my feet wet!!! (there was sand everywhere!!!!lmao :-) !!!

We got back from the beach after 5pm last night - a great day was had by all ... but I have to say I struggled to keep the eyes open in Line Dancing last night ... :-D!!!

Kelsey catching some waves

Kelsey and Matthew in the surf...

Ride that wave boy!!!!!

And of course we're still off today so the idea was to have a lie in seeing as we were up early yesterday ... First it was the text messaging at 7.30am!!! (you know who you are!!!) then it was the Bin men, then the bloody dogs... why do I even bother ???? I bet you everyone's quiet as a church mouse tomorrow when I'm already up at 5.30am !!!

Am I starting to sound a bit paranoid ???

4 Days Off

Well this is going to be a nice weekend... (or not) we've got 4 days off (Tuesday is Youth Day so the school has opted for an inset day on Monday - nice one) ... and NO Rugby... !!! Whatever am I going to do with myself??? lol

Although the boys played Rugby on Wednesday afternoon - against Winston Park and our team (the 2nd's) beat them 58 - 0... so the kids were pleased about that one...(coach even patted Kelsey on the back !!! we must be going up in the popularity stakes! lmao) got some more rugby photos but been a bit lazy about putting them on the computer (well I've got the next 4 days to do that ha! ha!)

Just a quickie today - after all I have the next 4 days to blog some more .... or not!!!

Thursday, 11 June 2009

Just a quick note ...

Well in case you hadn't heard ... Kelsey & I are popping back over to UK for a visit... :-)

Kelsey's got 3 weeks off school at the end of June - mid July and as you know Paul usually 'pops' over here during the school holidays well this time he surprised us by sending our airline tickets for us to visit him instead ... Going to be an expensive trip !!!! lmao

So I'm hoping I'm going to be able to get together with a lot of you for coffee... chat... catch-up... and of course lots of shopping ... (BNM hope you've been practising those coffee cakes???)

We arrive Monday 29th June and depart again 16th July... I hope I can get to see alot of you during that time...

I'll be taking my phone book with me and I'll probably organise a couple of coffee mornings/evenings etc. at my place... that's in between all the other socialising I've got to do ... oh! it's a hard life but someones gotta do it...

Winter Blues....

Hillcrest vs Gelofte 6th June 2009. Getting ready to play barefoot rugby for the first time.
Playing hard, having fun and getting very dirty....
That's Kelsey on the left in the green/white shirt, pushing (or rucking as it's called) the opposition so his team mates can get to the ball... Looks pretty fierce to me.

As you can see managed to get some photos downloaded onto my computer... having to use the basic windows photo editor... can't quite get my head around it but hey it's better than nothing...

Well I can't believe the change in the weather... :-(

On Friday last week we were still wearing short sleeved shirts and thin cotton trousers, but it was starting to feel a little chillier !!! ... Saturday mum and I dressed a little warmer and we were peeling the layers off like onions... temperature rose to mid 20's ...

Woke up Sunday morning to an overcast and cloudy sky, with a slight wind and at 9am it was still dark... Put the heating on, the vest on, the winter trousers on, the mammoths on and even the body warmer ... lmao!!! We kinda forget that it does get cold in Africa but what makes it worse is their houses here are not designed for the cold... Plus the fact the front door stands open all day for the dogs to go in and out !!!!! Now I know why the African women always walk around with blankets wrapped around their legs... guess who's going out to buy herself a cozy blanket !!!!

I had a relatively child free weekend... remember I told you last post that I'm now a Taxi Mum, well Matthew's mum called me on Friday and asked if Kelsey wanted to go home with them after rugby on Saturday and sleep over Saturday night, Kelsey was over the moon... I can't decide which he was most excited about this weekend, going to the movies on Friday night to see X-Men Origins - Wolverine, playing barefoot rugby or the sleepover at Matts place... But we managed to squeeze all this excitement into 1 weekend, Kelsey arrived home yesterday afternoon at about 4.30pm and by 5.30pm he was fast asleep in bed ... slept right through, I tried to wake him for his dinner but he was'nt interested...

Finally I have found someone who can tire my boy out ... lmao.
I spent the weekend reading... knitting!!! (aunty June's birthday present) and even some beading !!! Won't show you the results just yet!!!! (have my reasons for that - all will be revealed later)

At 5.30am this morning it was bloody freezing and wet too... it had been raining thru the night... Mum and I won't be venturing too far today, we're sat here huddled around a little fire. Spending this time here in June's house is showing me all the 'extras' I'm gonna need in my place when it finally gets finished ... and the ducted aircon/heating definately sounds like a good choice... :->

What, Can't be!!!!

Friday already!!! How is that possible?

Not wanting to be saying the same things over and over but why do I feel like it was only just Monday yesterday... Is this a good sign or a bad one... Do you think maybe I'm missing a couple of days in my weeks??? LMAO

So Monday got a phone call from Maxo specialist - they had a cancellation and they could fit me in for phase 1 of my tooth nightmare on Tuesday... I figured don't hesitate cos if you think about it you'll never get in done... and I guess the fact I was in a lot of pain over the weekend kinda made my mind up for me!!!! By the time I'd got my impressions sorted and had to deliver them to technician... spent 2 hours in a local bead shop (why??? cos I was there!!!!) it was time to fetch my boy!!!

I've now become a Taxi Mum too... helping one of Kelsey's friends out by giving him a lift home daily now. Well I figured I may as well drive with a full car rather than an empty one and I know Matts parents were struggling trying to juggle jobs and school runs.... and Kelsey and Matt are good friends at school ( in fact always in trouble together lol !!! ;-D) They play rugby together too so they finish at the same time...

Tuesday saw me dragging mum with me to the Specialist ... not that she could drive if I needed her to etc. but it was good to have someones hand to squeeze !!! Before I knew it we were on our way back home (no need for the sleepless night worrying on Monday!!!) Tooth done and dusted ... now I just talk funny (funnier than usual) because I have a plate holding my mouth together ... Then it's a check up to see I'm healing OK next week and it's a 3 month wait till the jaw has healed... till phase 2 where they go back in to add another piece of my bone...

Collected boys from Rugby to be told they were both playing on Wednesday at Highbury (a boys school literally next door) it was home, homework, dinner and bed ... that quick.

I decided last month already, that I needed to do at least 1 thing a month for me ... ONLY!!! so I have found me a lovely salon 'Talons' that has a nail technician, physiotherapist and beautician all in the same place... Wednesday morning I pampered my feet ... LURVERLY STUFF... Then it was home pack the flask, pick up the boys and spend the 'cold' afternoon watching rugby (again) Took loads of photos (again! still working on the photoshop on the computer!!!) Maybe when I get it sorted I'll just have hundreds of photos instead of words !!!

Talking of my computer.... sort of back and working except I'm still missing a few 'packages' and of course now found out I can't print cos we can't find the disk to install my printer ... but how clever am I??? I send anything I want printing to Kelsey's computer and then print from his!!! I know there are those of you out there who are laughing hysterically now... :-) but it works for me and not a stressful as trying to find the damn disk!!!

Thursday morning - TMC meeting - we have a 'Polar Bear Swim' coming up this month ... mum's needed to serve Hot Chocolate and Hot Dogs (damned that right arm again!!!!) and they're planning a Golf Day in August... More stuffs to organise ... ;-} O! well gotta keep busy and out of mischief...

Collected the boys from Rugby yesterday and guess what ----- they're playing Rugby again on Saturday .... BUT this is hysterical ---- BAREFOOT !!! Yes you read it right ... as in NO SHOES, NO BOOTS !!! O.I.A ! Apparently this is because they are playing a school called 'Gelofte' which is an Afrikaans ONLY school and these kids play rugby BAREFOOT !!!! Gotta make sure I have the camera fully loaded for this one ... Kelsey and Matt (and the rest of the teams) all came walking out of practise yesterday with 'filthy' feet .... (lmao very loudly)

And now here we are to Friday again ... so who thinks I still have time to get my business up and running???

Monday, 1 June 2009

Time ???

Just where does it fly to??? Considering I had nothing planned for today and now I've just looked at the clock and half the days already gone....

The weekend (what's that???) well the boys (2nd's and 1st teams) played great rugby on Saturday they both beat their arch rivals Kloof Snr Primary. Score for Kelsey's team was 22 - 5 to Hillcrest. They were all so pleased... the score for the 1st team was a bit closer not sure exact scores, I know it was quite an intense game but both teams played exceptionally well....

We got home just in time for Kelsey to get changed and then him and Aunty June were off riding !!! No wonder the kid was shattered on Saturday night... lmao!!!

Sunday hooray I finally got a lie in well... I got to stay in bed but sleep (not). Uncle L. spent the night here with us on Saturday night and Shadow (the mutt) did not like this one little bit !!!! So Lawrence left fairly early for work... Shadow barked for ages after he left!!! And Indi and Shadow have started playing a new game - running up and down the fence irritating the next door neighbours dogs (and me!!!) right outside my bedroom ... (well you can imagine the mood I woke up in !!! And to make matters even worse the mouth is bloody sore again!!!)

But I did get to start working on my computer - got my 'security/Internet protection' sorted then I sorted my e-mail's out all by myself (go ahead tell me how clever I am!!!) I started to download my e-mails - all 429 of them and then I ran out of GB (that's Internet usage for those of you who are lucky enough to live in a country that has Internet access available 24hrs a day not capped !!!!! only in Africa aaaaargh !!!)

So guess what I'm back on line this morning and downloading all bloody 429 again!!!! Isn't this just fun !!! And now I have to delete half of them that already came thru yesterday .... remind me again how computers make your life easier PLEASE!!!!

But I don't have any contacts in my address book.... so any of you reading this who want to be added to my address book, so we can keep in touch other than blogging WILL have to send me their addresses again ... E-mail me on janetb@giglin-gecko.com ... "you don't e-mail you don't go on list" lmao loudly !!!

This morning there I was back at the dentist - my back tooth is in serious pain and the front cap has come loose again and now my dentist has requested from the specialist to try and fit me in sooner ... how exciting is that???

Oh and before I forget : Today is Aunty Irena's Birthday and she's being real grumpy about it so ..... 'Happy Birthday' to you ;-)!!!
